March 17, 2007 ? A brisk cold morning descended on the eighteen boats that competed in the South Anglers Challenge Lake Wylie division this past Saturday. Once again the competitors showed why tournament for tournament Lake Wylie is one of the best producing lakes in the Carolina?s. Muddy water and warm conditions the past week had ignited Lake Wylie into a bassing bonanza. On fire is not the word for this small lake on the border of South and North Carolina for the third month in row stringers surpassed the 20-pound mark. The winning team of Steve Whitesides and John Tolley took top honors in this slugfest with an incredible stringer weighing in at 24.19 pounds and anchored by the big bass of the day 6.94-pound Carolina largemouth. Steven and John took a first place check worth $750 and big fish purse of $180. In a close second was the team of Clay Stevens and Jason Powell with another incredible bag of fish weighing 23.19 pounds. The second place team took home a fat check for $410 and big smile for a awesome day on the water. The last and final paid position went to the team of Ken Cross and Eddie Smith with 19.91 pounds. This was the first tournament of the year for this angling duo, but with a nice 3rd place check of $280 they are sure to be back around. All but two teams weighed in limits this week and there were multiple fish over four pounds weighed. Wylie is on fire and most teams reported high numbers of fish catches some as high as 40 fish! The jig and spinnerbait were key lures in everybody?s day as the water on Wylie is muddy and in the mid-50?s. Next tournament will be held April 21, 2007 love to see some new faces and top this years-best weight so far of 24.19lbs.
